Valu, an Egyptian consumer FinTech platform offering buy-now-pay-later and consumer financing solutions, has secured a loan facility of up to $12.2 million (EGP 600 million/€10.7 million) from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to expand access to energy-efficient household technologies across Egypt.
The funding will support financing for products, including energy-efficient appliances, solar solutions, and other green technologies.
The financing comes from the EBRD and is accompanied by a $86.3K technical assistance package to help Valu develop dedicated green-finance products, strengthen investment tracking capabilities, and build a pipeline of eligible sustainable assets.
Karim Riad, CFO of Valu, said, “This partnership with the EBRD highlights the trust that EBRD has in Valu’s ability to advance accessible green finance at scale in Egypt. By integrating dedicated green financing solutions into Valu’s platform, we enable consumers to make more sustainable purchasing decisions without compromising affordability or convenience.”
Founded in 2017, Valu has grown into one of Egypt’s largest consumer finance platforms and was among the pioneers of the buy-now-pay-later model in the Middle East and North Africa. It is the first FinTech company providing consumer finance to become a listed company on the Egyptian Exchange (EGX). Also, Amazon has a direct stake in the firm.
The company currently offers financing plans of up to 60 months through a merchant network spanning more than 9000 stores and online platforms. Valu also offers investment products, an instant cash redemption programme, and a high-end financing programme to facilitate the purchase of big-ticket items up to EGP 60 million in the luxury space, and its marketplace, through Valu Invest with the AZ Valu fund and EFG Hermes ONE, Sha2labaz, Ulter, and Shop’IT, respectively.
Valu also offers business-to-business solutions through Valu Business. Valu introduced its prepaid card and co-branded credit card in collaboration with Visa, further expanding its range of payment options to provide customers with the most versatile, convenient, and comprehensive payment solutions.
According to the company, the new facility will extend climate-related financing directly to households rather than focusing solely on corporate projects.
Through Valu’s digital platform, consumers will be able to access financing for energy-saving appliances, solar installations, and other technologies aimed at reducing energy consumption and household costs.
EBRD Managing Director for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean (SEMED) region Mark Davis said: “This project marks the EBRD’s first partnership with a consumer finance company in Egypt and the SEMED region, as well as our first collaboration with Valu, reflecting our commitment to leveraging leading fintech platforms to expand access to sustainable finance. By supporting Valu’s digital financial solutions, we are enabling households to access energy‑efficient and climate‑friendly solutions on affordable terms, extending green finance to individual consumers and supporting Egypt’s transition to a more resilient, low‑carbon economy.”
The initiative aligns with Egypt’s broader sustainability ambitions and aims to stimulate demand for energy-efficient and renewable technologies among consumers. Since beginning operations in Egypt in 2012, the EBRD has invested more than €14.6 billion across more than 225 projects in the country.
