Emirates NBD and global startup accelerator Techstars have struck a strategic partnership built around what the two organisations call an “Acceleration-to-Enterprise” model. The collaboration marks a shift from conventional startup mentorship to a commercially-driven pipeline that plugs emerging AI and FinTech companies straight into a major regional bank’s operations.
In stark contrast to simply offering startups advice, capital or networking opportunities, the arrangement is designed to embed high-growth innovations directly into Emirates NBD’s ecosystem across the Middle East, North Africa and Türkiye (MENAT) region. The partnership pairs Techstars’ international founder network spanning more than 11,000 entrepreneurs with Emirates NBD’s existing analytics infrastructure, which the bank says already runs over 50 active AI use cases.
Together, the two organisations plan to build scalable, commercial pathways for “agentic” FinTech startups – companies building AI systems capable of autonomous decision-making – with a specific focus on compliance, wealth management, SME banking and capital markets.
The initiative is explicitly tied to Dubai’s D33 economic agenda, the emirate’s plan to become one of the world’s four leading financial centres by 2033.
“With Dubai now home to nearly 60% of GCC FinTech companies, we are pleased to partner with Techstars to tap into and capture FinTech’s new wave of innovation in agentic finance. Leveraging Emirates NBD’s regional footprint and digital capabilities, we are providing selected AI and FinTech startups with a direct pathway into enterprise banking, supporting solutions that can transform how we serve our nine million active customers,” said Miguel Rio Tinto, Group Chief Digital and Information Officer of Emirates NBD.
Neeraj Makin, Emirates NBD’s Group Head of Strategy, Analytics and Venture Capital, described the partnership as an extension of the bank’s efforts to strengthen its innovation ecosystem and deepen ties with global technology and startup networks. He said the combination of founder access, market intelligence and emerging technology trends was meant to support the group’s longer-term digital and AI strategy across the region.
Since it was founded in 2006, Techstars has made the mentorship-driven accelerator model popular and has helped launch and grow thousands of companies, including unicorns such as Chainalysis, Zipline, and DataRobot. As part of this partnership with Emirates NBD, Techstars said the deal gives its portfolio companies practical, hands-on access to test their products in a live banking environment. Startups accepted into the program will be able to pilot secure, personalised banking solutions using Emirates NBD’s cloud-native infrastructure.
David Cohen, founder & CEO of Techstars, said, “Techstars has always been about helping founders go faster. By partnering with a proactive, AI-first institution like Emirates NBD, we are giving our FinTech and AI founders a front-row seat to one of the most dynamic financial markets in the world. The UAE’s commitment to becoming a global hub for intelligent, data-driven innovation makes it the perfect launchpad for enterprise-grade solutions that will redefine the future of finance.”
The partnership reflects a broader shift among Gulf banks, which are increasingly looking past traditional accelerator sponsorships toward deeper commercial integration with startups, treating emerging AI and FinTech firms less as grantees and more as potential technology suppliers and partners.
For Techstars, the deal offers its global founder network a rare foothold inside a major regional banking group’s live infrastructure, rather than a purely advisory relationship. For Emirates NBD, it doubles as a signal of intent tied to Dubai’s push to cement itself among the world’s top financial centres by the next decade.
