AfricInvest, a pan-African investment platform, has invested in Moroccan payments company Vantage Payment Systems (VPS) through its Financial Inclusion Vehicle (FIVE).

The money went into Equity Invest, the personal holding company of VPS majority shareholder Ali Bettahi. However, the deal size was not disclosed.

Equity Invest has increased its ownership of VPS to 100%, uniting all shareholders under one owner. VPS will now focus on launching a Point-of-Sale (POS) service for in-person payments, while also continuing to invest in its e-commerce and SoftPOS products.

This change reflects market trends, as almost 90% of electronic payments in Morocco were made offline in 2025, with only about 10% being online. VPS aims to provide merchants of all sizes with one platform for accepting payments online, in stores, and on mobile devices.

“FIVE’s investment marks an important milestone for VPS. Over the years, VPS has built a leading position in electronic payments in Morocco. We are now entering a new chapter in our history with a bold ambition to extend this leadership to proximity acquiring and build a truly omnichannel platform. Our new POS acquiring offering is central to this ambition. With FIVE on board, we now have the resources to accelerate our development, invest further in innovation, and support more merchants as they digitise their payments,” said Ali Bettahi, Chairman of VPS.

Vantage Payment Systems (VPS) operates in the electronic payments sector in Morocco. The company focuses on various payment methods, including e-commerce, POS acquiring, SoftPOS, and digital payment solutions.

The company is recognised for its technological capabilities and understanding of the local market, offering tailored payment solutions to businesses. It is licensed by Bank Al-Maghrib, certified for PCI DSS compliance, and has the necessary approvals from Visa and Mastercard.

“Morocco is currently experiencing sustained economic growth. Turning this momentum into lasting opportunity requires accelerating the digitalisation of payments, a key lever in a country where cash still accounts for the vast majority of transactions. Driving the adoption of digital payments is therefore a priority to unlock Morocco’s full potential. Through our investment in VPS, we are providing a concrete response to this challenge, by supporting the rollout of a truly omnichannel and inclusive offering for Moroccan merchants, from small businesses to large enterprises,” said Omar Bekkali, Partner at AfricInvest.

FIVE is a permanent investment fund that supports financial institutions and FinTech companies in Africa to provide affordable financial services to underserved consumers and small businesses.

Its investments include a payment infrastructure provider called Onafriq, a remittance startup named Kredete, and a vehicle financing company called Moove. It also has shares in Morocco’s CFG Bank. AfricInvest, founded in 1994 in Tunisia, has raised over $2.5 billion and funded more than 250 companies.

VPS will use the funding to roll out its POS acquiring offering and keep investing in technology. It will also develop new products and services and expand its commercial presence across Morocco.
