EBANX, a Curitiba-based FinTech company, has become the first global payments company to use OPay Direct Debit, a recurring payment feature in the digital wallet of Nigerian digital bank OPay.
Global subscription businesses that use EBANX can now offer it at checkout and reach OPay’s 40 million monthly active users, about one in three adults in Nigeria.
Users approve the payment once in the OPay app. After that, merchants can collect future subscription charges without the customer being present or re-entering payment details each time.
“With one of the continent’s highest mobile penetration rates and a young, fast-growing population, Nigeria is expected to remain Africa’s largest and most strategic digital market over the next decade. Being the first global payments company to go live with recurring payments through OPay is a testament to the access EBANX has built in emerging markets,” said Eduardo de Abreu, CPO, EBANX.
EBANX is a technology platform that connects global businesses to fast-growing digital markets. Founded in 2012 by Alphonse Voigt, João Del Valle and Wagner Ruiz, the company’s mission is to make international online shopping more accessible.
EBANX allows businesses to offer multiple local payment options and simplifies cross-border payments in regions like Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
In 2026, it set up its technology and regulatory headquarters in Singapore. Beyond just handling payments, EBANX helps businesses grow, boost sales, and provide seamless shopping experiences for their customers. Only 5% of Nigerian adults have a credit card, while 84% own a mobile phone, according to the World Bank’s Global Findex.
EBANX reports that 95% of online spending comes from those without credit cards, a trend expected to continue. Digital wallets and bank transfers account for 65% of e-commerce volume.
Nigeria, valued at $30 billion, is Africa’s largest e-commerce market and is projected to add 32 million new consumers by 2036. The company says this gives merchants potential access to more than 1 billion consumers who use local methods such as digital wallets and account-to-account transfers.
“Nigeria is the latest proof point on how EBANX scales operationally across emerging markets, not by replicating a single playbook, but by building the right integration for each local market. The gap between how people actually pay and the payment methods merchants have historically supported is exactly where we see the most room to grow, and OPay Direct Debit is one more example of building that bridge for global merchants,” said Marin Mignot, COO, EBANX
The launch follows a similar EBANX project in South Africa, where Canva became the first international company to offer recurring payments through Capitec Pay’s account-to-account solution. The OPay integration applies the same approach in Nigeria.
“This will give Nigerians an easy, fast and convenient way to pay for the global digital services they love, from streaming platforms to online tools. With OPay Direct Debit, customers can enjoy a simple payment experience while staying in control of their subscriptions,” said Elizabeth Wang, Chief Commercial Officer, OPay.
OPay is a digital bank in Nigeria. Its wallet lets consumers pay for purchases, make bank transfers and set up recurring payments.
OPay provides a variety of services including payments, transfers, savings, and loans. It also offers POS services for agents and acquiring services for merchants. OPay currently serves millions of users, agents, and merchants in Nigeria.
Back in May 2026, OPay announced the expansion of its $874,884 (₦1.2 billion), 10-year scholarship programme. Now rebranded as OPay Scholars for its 2026 edition, the programme is also adding an Innovation Challenge developed in partnership with Google and OPay Futures.
A few days back, Standard Bank Group signed an agreement to invest in OPay. On October 9, OPay filed a registration statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission and applied to list its American Depositary Shares on the New York Stock Exchange.
