Swedish-Kenyan renewable energy company Miale Solar Inventions has secured $5.5 million in credit financing from Hivos-Triodos Fonds, in a deal brokered through Sweden-based crowdfunding platform Trine.

The investment sets the stage for the company’s next phase of expansion in East Africa’s clean energy market.

The financing will enable Miale Solar to deploy an additional 9 MW of solar power through rooftop and ground-mounted installations within the next 6 to 12 months.

Beyond the extra generation capacity, the facility strengthens the company’s ability to fund Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and lease-to-own projects, which allow Kenyan clients to install solar systems without the burden of upfront capital.

“We consider Triodos to have a proven track record in the field of sustainable finance and impact investing in the renewable energy sector. This partnership is strategic to our goal of scaling our impact by accessing the resources needed to fully realise our project pipeline, particularly in the healthcare sector. We look forward to playing our part in supporting the development of Kenya and the wider East African region as a vibrant impact finance destination,” said Eric Mwenda, Chief Financial Officer at Miale Solar.

Miale Solar is a company focused on providing clean and renewable energy solutions. They specialise in the procurement, construction, and financing of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, with capacities ranging from 50kWp to 10MWp. The company designs personalised energy solutions tailored to meet different needs and budgets.

The company has a skilled team that manages all aspects of solar projects, ensuring a smooth transition to solar energy. Miale Solar aims to assist clients in reducing costs, lowering carbon footprints, and enhancing sustainability.

At present, the company sees the healthcare sector as a priority market, given the critical role reliable electricity plays in operating medical equipment, diagnostic imaging machines, laboratories, air-conditioning systems and intensive care units. Where appropriate,

Miale Solar integrates battery energy storage solutions into its solar PV systems to deliver a more dependable supply tailored to each client’s requirements.

“The financing arrangement enhances the capacity of the company to meet emerging opportunities as they arise. Speed is often a deciding factor in the solar energy value chain. When a client approaches us to own and operate a solar PV system, we must mobilise the necessary capital to meet their demand. Institutional credit lines allow us to operate more efficiently while reducing our dependence on ad hoc financing for individual projects,” he added.

Hivos-Triodos Fonds is an established impact-investment vehicle managed by Triodos Investment Management, part of Triodos Bank, a well-known name in sustainable banking.

In 2025, Triodos Bank reported €1.1 billion in new business lending across its five transition themes, while Triodos Investment Management’s climate and energy funds financed 186 energy-sector projects during the year.
