Tennsa, the Cape Town-based startup building an operational intelligence platform for small and medium businesses, has closed its pre-Seed round with Oakvale Invest, a family-backed investment firm.
Tennsa has raised more than $61k (ZAR 1 million) from Oakvale Invest, becoming the first portfolio company of what the firm calls Africa’s first AI-focused pre-Seed fund.
“They backed us at the stage most funds call “too early”, and they did the work to understand what we are building and how to take it to the world,” said River Maharaj, founder of Tennsa, in a LinkedIn post.
Founded by Maharaj, Tennsa is an AI software development company based in Cape Town. The company builds Tennsa OS, which is an always-on intelligence layer for the operations of growing businesses.
According to the company, most growing businesses don’t have a data problem; they have a coherence problem. “Information lives in fragments – accounting in one tool, inventory in another, calendars and email and banking each telling a slice of the story. The result is that operators end up reacting to whatever surfaces loudest, not what matters most. Dashboards multiply. Meetings expand to reconcile them. The view of the business gets more expensive without getting more useful,” Tennsa explained.
The company claims that Tennsa OS reads those systems as one coherent operating picture and surfaces only the signals that warrant a human decision. It sits across the systems a business already runs on – accounting, inventory, CRM, email, calendars, banking – and reads them as one.
Every morning, it briefs the use of what changed overnight, what’s at risk, and what to act on first. When something needs investigating, one click opens a grounded conversation with the underlying data. The AI answers from real numbers and refuses to fabricate when data is missing, states Tennsa.
The company is backed by Google for Startups and built with integrations for the South African stack (IQ Retail, Sage, Xero, PayFast, Yoco), as well as native compliance with the local regulatory environment (POPIA, data sovereignty).
Oakvale Invest is a family-backed investment firm founded by the Ekdahl family, which brings more than 30 years of entrepreneurial and investment experience, including over 60 M&A transactions, three Nasdaq listings, and involvement in two tech unicorns.
The firm has a mid-term capital commitment of more than $10 million and focuses on backing technology-driven businesses across Africa with hands-on strategic and technical support.
“We built Oakvale Invest to back AI companies on the African continent where capital is hardest to find. Tennsa is exactly what we are looking for, a young African founder, a product built for this market rather than imported into it, and the pace to get it in front of businesses fast. This is the first of many,” said Herman Ekdahl of Oakvale Invest.
